R K Narayan: An Introduction

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami is popularly known as R. K. Narayan. He is regarded as one of India’s greatest English language novelists. He is credited with bringing Indian literature in English to the rest of the world. His works of fiction include a series of books about people and their interactions in a fictional town named Malgudi.
Narayan was born in Madras, (now known as Chennai), South India, on October 10, 1907. When he was a child his family moved to Mysore. But Narayan continued to live in Madras under the care of his grandmother. A Brahmin by birth, he learned Sanskrit. His mother tongue was Tamil. His knowledge of English came from his education. Narayan was a voracious reader. He learned a great deal of English literature during his school years.
R. K. Narayan was a great writer. Much of his work deals with the trials and troubles of twentieth century Indian life. He inculcates the wider issues with the simple day-to-day tasks of the everyman. He brought out the humour and energy of ordinary life. He displayed compassionate humanism in his writing. He is too simple in his prose and diction.
