Abstract

This biographical profile examines the intellectual trajectory of Dr. Hareshwar Roy, tracing his synthesis of postcolonial diasporic critique, vernacular Bhojpuri poetics, and grassroots educational democratization within contemporary Indian academia.

In contemporary postcolonial discourse, the tension between regional linguistic identity and global academic canons remains a central debate. The four-decade career of Dr. Hareshwar Roy, Professor of English at the PM College of Excellence, Govt. P.G. College, Satna, provides an exemplary model of how these seemingly opposing forces can be harmonized into a cohesive intellectual practice.

I. From Folk Dramaturgy to Critical Theory

Dr. Roy’s early engagement with narrative began not in university seminar rooms, but in the vibrant folk dramaturgy of rural Ramleela performances in Rohtas, Bihar. This early immersion in oral performance laid a durable foundation for his later scholarly pursuits.
At Patna University, his critical faculties were shaped under the mentorship of distinguished scholars, including Dr. R.C. Prasad and Dr. Kameshwar Prasad. Following his Master’s degree, Dr. Roy broadened his academic horizons with interdisciplinary qualifications in law (LL.B.) and education (B.Ed.). Parallel to his academic endeavors, Dr. Roy’s career is deeply defined by social advocacy. During his tenure as Lecturer at B.S.S. College, Bachari, Piro (1987–1995), he spearheaded the Anumandal Banao Sangharsh Samiti, orchestrating a successful public movement that led the Bihar government to declare Piro an official Sub-Division.

Through the initiative Yuva Kala Manch, he pioneered street theater (Nukkad Natak) as a dynamic vehicle for civic literacy, alongside establishing low-cost learning centers for economically disadvantaged students.

Dr. Hareshwar Roy beautifully connects global research with local literature. Born in 1964 in Jamuaon (Bhojpur, Bihar), he studied at Patna University and earned his Ph.D. from APS University, Rewa. Currently, he serves as Professor of English at Government P.G. College Satna, Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Roy bridges two worlds: in class, he explains international migration and literary history, while in his heart, he keeps the rich spirit of the Bhojpuri language alive. He has published over 45 research papers focused on Indian Diaspora Writing. As an author in English, he has written Diasporic Articulation in the Novels of M.G. Vassanji, A Study of M.G.
