Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion: APJ Kalam (Text)

I call to my people to rise to greatness. It is a call to all Indians to rise to their highest capabilities. What are the forces which lead to the rise or fall of nations? And what are the factors which go to make a nation strong? Three factors are invariably found in a strong nation; a collective pride in its achievements, unity and the ability for combined action. For a people and a nation to rise to the highest, they must have a common memory of great heroes and exploits, of great adventures and triumphs in the past. If the British rose to great heights it is because they had great heroes to admire, men like Lord Nelson, say, or the Duke of Wellington. Japan represents a fine example of national pride. The Japanese are proud of being one people, having one culture, and because of that they could transform a humiliating military defeat into a triumphant economic victory. All nations which have risen to greatness have been characterized by a sense of mission.

Unfortunately for India, historic forces have not given a common memory to all communities by taking them back to their roots a millennium down the ages. Not enough effort has been made in the last fifty years to foster that memory.

It is because our sense of mission has weakened that we have ceased to be true to our culture and ourselves. If we come to look upon ourselves as a divided people with no pride in our past and no faith in the future, what else can we look forward to except frustration, disappointment and despair?

In India, the core culture goes beyond time. It precedes the arrival of Islam; it precedes the arrival of Christianity. The early Christians, like the Syrian Christians of Kerala, have retained their Indianness with admirable determination. Are they less Christian because their married women wear the mangalsutra or their menfolk wear the dhoti in the Kerala style? Kerala’ Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, is not a heretic because he and his people are part of Kerala’s culture. Being a Christian does not make him an alien. On the contrary, it gives an added dimension to his Indianness. A. R. Rahman may be a Muslim but his voice echoes in the soul of all Indians, of whatever faith, when he sings Vande Matram.

The developed India will not be a nation of cities. It will be a network of prosperous villages empowered by telemedicine, tele-education and e-commerce. The new India will emerge out of the combination of biotechnology, biosciences and agriculture sciences and industrial development. The political leaders would be working with the zeal born of the knowledge that the nation is bigger than individual interests and political parties.

The most important and urgent task before our leadership is to get all the forces for constructive change together and deploy them in a mission mode. India is a country of one billion people with numerous religions and communities. It offers a wide spectrum of ideologies, besides its geographic diversity. This is our greatest strength. However, fragmented thinking, compartmentalized planning and isolated efforts are not yielding results. The people have to come together to create a harmonious India. The second vision of the nation will bring about a renaissance to the nation. The task of casting a strong India is in the hands of a visionary political leadership.

राजनीति और धर्म से परे देशभक्ति - एपीजे कलाम

ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि हमारे मिशन की भावना कमजोर हो गई है अथवा हम अपनी संस्कृति और खुद के प्रति ईमानदार नहीं रह गए हैं। अगर हम अपने आप को विभाजित लोगों के रूप में देखने लगें, जिन्हें अपने अतीत पर कोई गर्व नहीं है और भविष्य में कोई विश्वास नहीं है, तो हम हताशा और निराशा के अलावा और क्या देख सकते हैं?

भारत में मूल संस्कृति समय से परे जाती है। यह इस्लाम के आगमन से पहले का है; यह ईसाई धर्म के आगमन से पहले का है। प्रारंभिक ईसाइयों ने केरल के सीरियाई ईसाइयों की तरह सराहनीय दृढ़ संकल्प के साथ अपनी भारतीयता को बरकरार रखा है। क्या वे कम ईसाई हैं क्योंकि उनकी विवाहित महिलाएं मंगलसूत्र पहनती हैं या उनके पुरुष केरल शैली में धोती पहनते हैं? केरल के मुख्यमंत्री ए.के. एंटनी विधर्मी नहीं हैं क्योंकि वे और उनके लोग केरल की संस्कृति का हिस्सा हैं। ईसाई होने से वह पराया नहीं हो जाता। इसके विपरीत यह उनकी भारतीयता को एक अतिरिक्त आयाम देता है। ए.आर.रहमान मुसलमान हो सकते हैं लेकिन जब वे वंदे मातरम गाते हैं तो उनकी आवाज सभी भारतीयों की आत्मा में गूंजती है, चाहे वे किसी भी धर्म के हों।

विकसित भारत शहरों का देश नहीं होगा। यह टेलीमेडिसिन, टेली-एजुकेशन और ई-कॉमर्स द्वारा सशक्त समृद्ध गांवों का नेटवर्क होगा। जैव प्रौद्योगिकी, जैव विज्ञान और कृषि विज्ञान और औद्योगिक विकास के मेल से नया भारत उभरेगा। राजनीतिक नेता इस ज्ञान से पैदा हुए उत्साह के साथ काम कर रहे होंगे कि राष्ट्र व्यक्तिगत हितों और राजनीतिक दलों से बड़ा है।

हमारे नेतृत्व के सामने सबसे महत्वपूर्ण और जरूरी काम रचनात्मक बदलाव के लिए सभी ताकतों को एक साथ लाना और उन्हें मिशन मोड में तैनात करना है। भारत कई धर्मों और समुदायों के साथ एक अरब लोगों का देश है। यह अपनी भौगोलिक विविधता के अलावा विचारधाराओं का एक विस्तृत स्पेक्ट्रम प्रदान करता है। यह हमारी सबसे बड़ी ताकत है। हालाँकि, खंडित सोच, विभाजित योजना और अलग-अलग प्रयास परिणाम नहीं दे रहे हैं। एक सामंजस्यपूर्ण भारत बनाने के लिए लोगों को एक साथ आना होगा। राष्ट्र की दूसरी दृष्टि राष्ट्र में पुनर्जागरण लाएगी। एक मजबूत भारत के निर्माण का कार्य एक दूरदर्शी राजनीतिक नेतृत्व के हाथों में है।
